It's challenging to take a child to their first time at a day care center. How can you be certain that the place you selected will care for your child like you would? There are, however, a few items you can do to make the toddler care center process much easier.
Before Your Decision
- Schedule a Visit: Some day care facilities offer a clean, fun environment for children, while others are in dire need of an update. Eliminate any surprises by arranging a visit and speaking with the staff members.
- Review Accreditation: Make sure that your day care program is keeping up with stringent standards. The the National Early Childhood Program Accreditation (NECPA), the National Association of Young Children (NAEYC), and the the National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Programs (NAC) are three accrediting organization to look for.
- Check Adult-to-Child Ratio: A critical aspect of running a successful day care center is not having too many children for each member of the staff. A ratio of one adult for every ten children is fine for four-year-olds, but the ratio should be lowered to 1:4 with infants.
After Your Decision
- Schedule Meetings: Arrange frequent follow-up meetings with the day care center employees. This will supply an opportunity to ask about your child's behavior, what they are learning, and what is going on at the facility.
- Volunteer: Volunteer opportunities can be found at day care programs. This doesn't just mean changing diapers or reading to kids. You could also come after hours to clean or repair the facility.
- It's OK to Change Your Mind: Don't be afraid to select a new provider if something doesn't feel right to you. The well-being of your child is too valuable for an awkward conversation to put it in at risk.
